MEMBERABILIA: STILL THE BOS

Tennis legend teaches life’s lessons.

REMEMBER WHEN
Thank you for printing Sam Blair’s tribute
to tennis legend Bill Bos (“Legends,” March/April 2000). I first met Bill in 1973 when he was head tennis pro at Dallas Country Club. He gave me my first real job while I attended college. His dedication to hard work made a permanent impression. I always will remember Bill calling every tennis player the night before a club function to make sure they participated and did not miss out on the fun he knew they would have. On tournament day, he made sure the courts were spotless and even an offending leaf would be scooped up and put in Bill’s pocket.

As a member of Brookhaven Country Club since 1981, I reconnected with Bill and found his dedication to tennis and each member to be at his usual high level. However, it will be the non-tennis lessons I always will remember. Bill quietly reminded every staff member and even every member that no one is “too good” to fill in for a missing fourth or make sure a newcomer is properly welcomed.

I always will consider myself lucky for having known Bill Bos, a man of inexhaustible energy and a humble role model who deserves the title of “Legend.”

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
While in Singapore for the Rotary
International Convention, my wife and I had the opportunity to entertain guests at The American Club and Tower Club, the two Associate Clubs in that city.

We had visited both clubs in years past and were confident that the food and service would be excellent. As a matter of fact, this time they exceeded all our expectations.

In both cases, the ambience, the service, the hospitality, and the food were absolutely outstanding. From the moment we arrived at the clubs, we and our guests were treated with special care. Needless to say, our guests were tremendously impressed and we may even have recruited some new members.

Thank you and ClubCorp for another memorable experience. We compliment the staffs of both The American Club and Tower Club and hope we can return to see them soon.

UPHOLDING TRADITION
I have been a member at Hunter’s Green
Country Club in Tampa, Florida, for about five years. Our club has sponsored a “Second Night Seder,” a celebration of the Jewish festival of Passover, every year. Our family has attended this gathering each year and has enjoyed it very much. The event has become somewhat of a tradition within the Jewish community of North Tampa. This year’s event, under the guidance of the club’s new food and beverage director, Edward Bujarski, was the most enjoyable to date. We are all very proud of our club for establishing such a tradition for the Jewish community.

SWINGING FOR A CURE
A word of thanks to ClubCorp, Deerwood
Club, Kingwood Country Club, and especially our area general manager Phil Stika and director of golf Scott Curiel.

In the summer of 1997, several members and staff at Deerwood Club were diagnosed with cancer in a short span of time. In order to show support, fellow members started Golfers Against Cancer to raise funds for research to speed a cure.

Through ClubCorp’s staunch support, as well as that of corporate leaders like Continental Airlines, Kellogg Brown & Root, Shell, and BMW, we have raised almost $1 million for cancer research.

This year, we will again fill up the wonderful courses in Kingwood for our cause on Nov. 20 and hope to raise another $1 million to benefit CaP CURE, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and other leading research beneficiaries. It would not be possible without ClubCorp’s local leadership and the wonderful contributions to our auction from the other Associate Clubs across the nation. We have seen the progress made by our research beneficiaries and look forward to speeding the cure with your continued support.

LOOKING GOOD
Many thanks to the staff of the
George Washington University Club for making me look good in front of my future mother-in-law.

Recently, I got engaged to a wonderful person in Washington, D.C. For her mother’s first visit to the area since our engagement, I took them to the historic George Washington University Club for dinner. Upon arrival at the club, a complimentary bottle of bubbly arrived at the table with the club’s best wishes.

These personal touches mean so much to us. This evening will be among the many important — and early — memories we share as we start our new life together.

MATRIMONIAL MAGIC MOMENTS
My husband and I were married in
Savannah, Georgia, on Dec. 31, 1999. We celebrated our wedding at the First City Club in Savannah. Although the club was having a members-only New Year’s Eve millennium gala, they kindly allowed us to join the members in celebrating our marriage.

Our deepest appreciation to Bianca Quintanilla, the catering director, who took care of every extra detail from long distance. She placed our table by the dance floor and arranged a floral centerpiece, wedding cake, first dance, and vintage champagne just for us.

And the members? We lost count of the congratulations we received during the course of the evening. They were so welcoming, gracious, and proud to have us celebrating with them. It was a night to remember. Our hats off to the entire First City Club — employee partners and members.

SINGAPORE HOSPITALITY
On a recent trip to Singapore to
visit my son-in-law and my daughter, I had the pleasure of visiting The American Club. Being so far away from home seemed a little frightening in a culture so different from Southern California. However, we were greeted by a group of the staff who quickly made us feel at home.

The club has a great pool, a number of restaurants (all excellent), bowling alleys, a library, and a computer lab, which helped me stay in touch even on the other side of the world. We had a great dinner in the main restaurant where service director Sa’at Masuki served us the best dinner we had in Singapore. Chef David Lease’s meal was outstanding. I cannot thank the staff enough for making us feel at home. Service and efficiency seem to be the watchword at this Associate Club.

A+ GRADE
Having recently returned from a brief trip
to the San Diego area, we wanted to share our experience at Morgan Run Resort & Club. After playing golf, we returned for dinner. What a treat. It was “opening night” for a complete new menu. “Try everything,” said our waitress. “We need your opinions.” The menu and food were fabulous and the presentation deserved an A+. The decor and ambience of the dining room was delightful. Beautiful vistas, complete with hot air balloons ascending and descending in the not-too-distant horizon.

WONDERFUL WEDDING
My wife and I recently sponsored the wed
ding reception for the daughter of a friend at the South Carolina Yacht Club on Hilton Head Island. The staff and service were excellent, as was the food. We congratulate the management and staff of the Yacht Club for providing our friends and the newlyweds and their guests a wonderful, memorable evening.

FINAL DECISION
Recently, my wife and I, my daughter and
her fiancé had the pleasure of dining at the The Tower Club Tysons Corner near Washington, D.C. Karen and Chip will be married in October in Alexandria and we were in the process of selecting a site for the wedding reception. We were visiting the Tower Club to let the couple experience the food and service there before they made their final decision.

I have had the pleasure of dining at many fine establishments during my life and my dining experience at the Tower Club that evening ranks with the best. The food was outstanding with a very professional presentation. And the wait staff seemed to be choreographed to deliver the food in an elegant but unobtrusive manner. We were all very impressed.

I sincerely appreciate the extra touch the club provided by selecting roses and a small cake to commemorate the occasion. It was a special evening for everyone and the attention to every detail helped make this an unforgettable evening. Karen and Chip have decided to hold the reception at the Tower Club.

HAPPY 50TH
I hosted a surprise 50th birthday party for
my brother at the Capital City Club in Montgomery, Alabama. This is not even my home club but I was treated like an old friend by everyone involved. Every detail of the arrangements was carried out perfectly and the food was magnificent.

Since the remainder of my family lives in Montgomery, my husband and I also have dinner there frequently. The service and food are always wonderful, and the wine list is a great balance of selection and price.
