IRISH
PUB HAUL
The Irish pub behind Harry Bosco’s home is so authentic that
the door on the bathroom is 300 years old. Bass, Harp, and Guinness are
on tap. The glass is stained, the bar is mahogany, and the pub was even
built in Ireland — before it was taken apart, put on a ship, and totally
reassembled in Bosco’s backyard abutting the 18th fairway of
DeBary Golf
& Country Club in DeBary, Florida. “I know, it sounds a little crazy,”
says Bosco, who with wife Judith was thinking of adding a bonus room to
their home in 2001 when they came across a real Irish pub at the West
Palm Beach airport. “We learned that it was built by an Irish company
that has built hundreds of pubs around the world. But they had all been
commercial ventures — they had never before done one for a private
home.” Which leads to one small concern: How often will you leave an
Irish pub and take a chance of falling into the swimming pool? Completed
in 2003, the pub is the site of the Boscos’ annual Super Bowl party for
some 150 people. “People are amazed when they see it for the first
time,” says Bosco, who notes that the pub is also the site of lots of
informal get-togethers. “But we have to regulate it a bit. We don’t want
to compete with the club.” The pub, by the way, does not include a
dartboard. “That’s a British thing,” he explains. “Don’t suggest that to
an Irishman. They gave me a hard enough time putting in a TV.”
Surprisingly, Bosco has never been to Ireland — but is planning an
upcoming visit. Imagine him sitting in a pub in Ballybunion, say, and
telling the barman, “Nice place you got here. Reminds me of the one I
got back home.” — Dave Orman
