SPORTS CAMPS AND BOOT CAMPS
At
Arizona’s Seville Golf & Country Club, the summer sports camp gets kids revved
up playing volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, and peewee soccer. But it’s
more than just a fun time; youngsters also get lessons in the activities — and
as any kid knows, such activities are usually more fun if done right.
It’s not all about sports at Seville’s camp. For example, kids 7-12 who sign up
for “Little Chefs” get cookin’ in the kitchen. Once a week they do some dishing
with the chef, whipping up pizzas, tacos, and other yummy treats.
Culinary fun also fires up kids ages 7 and up at
Porter Valley Country Club in
Northridge, California. In the club’s summer-camp cooking classes, youngsters
line up on one side of a long table, the chef on the other. It’s all very
hands-on as the pro coaches them on how to make pasta dishes, cookies, and much
more. When the burners get turned off, the kids play golf and tennis, swim, and
take fun field trips to places like Knott’s Berry Farm, Mountasia Family Fun
Center, and Dodger Stadium to take in nine innings of America’s favorite
pastime.
At Texas’ Trophy Club Country Club, summer golf camps don’t try to make Tiger
Woods out of kids ages 4-13. Instead, young duffers learn the game’s
fundamentals — grip, stance, alignment, etc. — while playing on the course each
day with the staff. They also have fun playing chipping games, where the kids
divide into teams and root for each other and holler and yell for their
teammates.
