RENOVATIONS
Canyon Gate Country Club in Las Vegas is home to a new fitness center featuring state-of-the-art Cybex equipment. Click here to check it out. A ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a cocktail hour took place on Sept. 25 in the Lakeview Room.
The new clubhouse at April Sound Country Club in Montgomery, Texas, is scheduled to open in late January. Construction began in July, and framing should be completed by mid-October. The clubhouse will be a 20,000-square-foot split-level overlooking Lake Conroe.

CLUB SCENE
The event: Nationwide Tour's Christmas in October Classic at Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate in Overland Park, Kan.
Dates: Aug. 17-23
What happened: About 10,000 people gathered at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate for the Nationwide Tour's Christmas in October Classic. Named after a Kansas City charity, the event was the first Nationwide PGA Tour held at the club. Australian Michael Sim shined with an impressive 20-under-par 264-stroke performance on the par-71 tournament course, proving to be a cut above the rest.
Why it rocks: Because this was Sim's third win on the Tour this year, he was instantly promoted to the PGA Tour. The cool $112,500 winner's check was icing on the cake.

CLUB NEWS
Country Club of Gwinnett in Snellville, Ga., kicked off its In House Tournament Series in July with the Summer Sizzler. Roughly 100 players turned out for the inaugural tourney and toasted to its success on the deck off of the Ford Room. Despite rain, 32 people played in the Pigskin Classic on Sept. 20. In the football spirit, they took part in a Longest Kick Off the Tee contest, a game to see who could kick a football farthest off the tee. The three remaining tournaments will keep the fun going throughout the year. Halloween Havoc is Oct.24; Gobbler Open is Nov. 14; and Chili Open is Dec. 19. The format of play is a 4-person scramble, and each event is open to members and the public.
The golf course at Aliso Viejo Country Club in Aliso Viejo, Calif., will be closed Sept. 29-Oct. 9 for overseeding. The course will re-open on Oct. 10.

RENOVATIONS
Woodside Plantation Country Club in Aiken, S.C., opened its newly renovated Cupp Course on Aug. 31. In celebration, the Club hosted a cookout and on-course games including a closest-to-the-pin contest, rolling the dice to find out what club to use, and an elimination game. Prizes were given to game winners and raffle ticket holders.

The event: ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Dates: June 22-25
What happened: About 80 golfers ages 12-18 gathered on the club's Dinah Shore Tournament Course for the 28th Annual ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior. The golf tournament, sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association, featured a 54-hole stroke-play event. Michael Weaver, an 18-year-old from Fresno, Calif., shot a 10-under-par 206 at the event to capture his first AJGA title. In the girls' division, 15-year-old Kelli Oride of Hawaii made birdie on her final playoff hole to secure her second AJGA victory.
Why it rocks: PGA stars Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Bob May are among the list of former champions at the Desert Junior.

• Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club near San Antonio helped raise about $40,000 in donations at the Swing Fling golf tournament, held June 15 at the club. More than 110 golfers competed in the event to raise money for the Boerne Boys & Girls Club, a nonprofit organization providing services and programs to help children learn and grow.
• Columbia Tower Club in Seattle held its 10th annual charity golf tournament at the nearby Rainier Golf & Country Club in late June. The event, which featured an 18-hole golf tournament, lunch, dinner, and auction, benefited the Outdoors For All Foundation. The foundation works to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities through outside recreation.
• Woodside Plantation Country Club in Aiken, S.C., hosted a qualifying tournament June 22 for the U.S. Junior Amateur. Four junior golfers earned spots for the Amateur during the 36-hole tournament. They are: Austin Cody, Sam Jackson III, Damon Postal, and Cody Proveaux.

The event: Silver Anniversary Gala at Commerce Club in Greenville, S.C.
Date: June 6
What happened: About 200 members and guests gathered at the club for the 25th anniversary celebration. “An Evening With the Dreammakers” featured a jazz band and DJ with ’80s music, dancing, silent auction, and ’80s-themed cocktails including the Blue Hawaiian and Harvey Wallbanger. Guests at the reception-style event sampled traditional Southern foods with a contemporary twist, such as fried green tomatoes with chow-chow relish and bananas Foster.
Why it rocked: Proceeds from the silent auction benefited the Greenville Chamber Foundation, a group that works to enhance educational, business, and legislative issues in the Greenville area.

• The 5th Annual Metal Chefs Competition, sponsored by the Chicago Society of Clubs, returns June 25 to the Mid-America Club in Chicago. Three Chicago-area chefs each will create a dish using a secret ingredient in hopes of capturing the title of Metal Chef 2009. This year’s competitors are executive chefs Greg Carso of the Metropolitan Club, Matt Castro of the House of Blues - Foundation Room, and Matt Maroni of the Mid-America Club.
• Tower Club of Dallas has partnered with Elevation Fitness Club to provide its members with gym memberships for $30 a month. The fitness club is located just outside the club’s home in the Thanksgiving Tower building.
• Aliso Viejo Country Club in Orange County, Calif., hosted the Second Annual Savannah’s Organic Ranch Golf Tournament May 21. The event, created to help raise money for pediatric cancer, featured a lunch prepared by club executive chef Brian Green, putting contest, four-person shamble, cocktail hour and silent auction, dinner, and live auction.
• Golfers gathered at Trophy Club Country Club near Dallas on June 5 for the 2009 Texas Shootout presented by Toyota of Lewisville. Former Long Drive World Champion Carl Wolter produced a 397-380 match-play win over LDA golfer Allen McDougall to win the long-drive challenge event.

• Woodside Plantation Country Club in Aiken, S.C., has begun a four-month renovation project to regrass 18 greens on the Bob Cupp-designed Plantation Course. Construction is slated for completion in early September.

The event: Grassroots Classic hosted by Nancy Lopez at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga.
Date: April 28
What happened: Golfers competed in a shamble to help raise money for a title sponsor that would bring an LPGA tournament back to the club. The event also featured a brunch with keynote speaker and club member Herman Cain, author of four books, and a golf clinic and press conference hosted by LPGA pros Nancy Lopez, Rosie Jones, and Laura Diaz. "Atlanta needs to have an LPGA stop, and the LPGA tour wants to have a stop in Atlanta," Lopez told the crowd before the tournament. The club hosted the LPGA Players Championship event from 1992 through 2006, when the tournament was canceled.
Why it rocked: Proceeds benefited Metro South Golf Charities, the host of 15 LPGA tournaments at Eagle's Landing Country Club. Over the years, MSCG has raised more than $7.5 million for charities around the local community.

• One Ninety One Club in Atlanta has partnered with Resolution Fitness to provide gym memberships to members. The 17,000-square-foot first-class health club is located on the third floor of the 191 Building, which also houses the club.
• Rosey Bartlett, director of golf instruction at Trophy Club Country Club near Dallas, is among the 2009 class of golfers who will be inducted into the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame in late October. Bartlett will join such former inductees as Byron Nelson and John Daly.
• Shady Valley Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, celebrated its 50th anniversary April 24-25 with a 1950s sock hop and anniversary gala featuring cocktails, a buffet, and live music from the jazz-swing band Trey & the Tritones. Click here for photos from the events
• The Club at Falcon Point in Katy, Texas, hosted the 2009 National Kidney Foundation Golf Tournament April 27. Players competed in a four-person scramble and contests for "longest drive" and "closest to the pin." The event raised about $5,000 for the National Kidney Foundation.
• During an episode of The Haney Project that aired in March, renowned golf coach Hank Haney and 11-time NBA All-Star Charles Barkley stopped by Barkley's home club, Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., for a round of golf and a session on the practice range. The new reality TV series airs on The Golf Channel.
• The University of Texas Club's Young Texans Society will host its 4th Annual Young Texans Society Charity Golf Tournament May 8 at The Hills Country Club in Austin, Texas. Participants will compete in a shotgun scramble to raise money for the Texas Exes Hispanic Challenge Grant Scholarship.

RENOVATIONS
• The Hills of Lakeway in Austin, Texas, began a renovation project this spring to resurface and repaint six of its 16 outdoor tennis courts. The club recently installed new lights in the ladies locker room and repainted the back room of the clubhouse.
• Lost Creek Country Club, also in Austin, has completed a bunker renovation project to clean out and re-edge the bunkers, repair and replace drainage, and install 6 inches of sand compacted to 4 inches in each bunker.
