Learn more about the man who gave us Mickey

By Elaine Glusac

Walt Disney, the man behind the industry that Mickey Mouse spawned, steps out from behind the curtain in the new Walt Disney Family Museum (waltdisney.org) in San Francisco. Housed in the historic Presidio, a former U.S. Army base with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the museum opens Oct. 1. Exhibits sketch the animator's life from rural Missouri to celluloid fame. Artifacts include a vintage 1940s Optical Printer that merged cartoon characters and live-action background, and the Oscars - one full size, seven miniatures - earned for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, in addition to animation cells and home movies.
