Don Misheff

On the value of his membership at Firestone Country Club (in Akron, Ohio)

BY LOUIS MARROQUIN

Why he joined:
“The course itself and the draw of being a member at Firestone was something that every golfer dreams of, in my opinion. Then, from a corporate standpoint, it helped advance my career in the business aspect of entertaining clients there.”

Building relationships on the course:
“Before semiretiring a few years ago, I was a managing partner with Ernst & Young. I can’t list the number of times I used Firestone as a vehicle to either bring down a barrier, repair a relationship, or enhance a relationship. Sitting across a desk from somebody discussing an issue, good or bad, is far more difficult than four hours on a golf course having some fun together. A lot of shields and issues go by the wayside.”

Second career: “I now own SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, Ariz. We have an affiliate agreement with ClubCorp. We try to instill many of Firestone’s attributes at this course. I call it the Firestone Experience, that Firestone spirit that always makes you feel welcome, like you’re dealing with friends and family.”

Family enrichment:
“My youngest daughter, Erin, was a professional golfer for two years. She developed her passion for golf and many of her skills at Firestone. She grew up around the club, worked in the pro shop, and learned how to deal with relationships and high-level executives through the members. All that has enhanced her career today as a consultant with Ernst & Young in Cleveland.”

Enduring impact:
“I don’t know what life would be without Firestone. It would be very disappointing. My second career as the owner of a golf club, some of the avenues that have opened for both of my daughters through relationships there, and people my wife and I have met — none of it would have happened without our Firestone relationship.”
