INSIDE SCOOP

Design is a powerful tool that can send subtle messages that influence what you like and buy. If you have any doubt, turn to "SUVs by Design." Writer Michael Frank interviewed designers of four of the newest SUVs on the market for the inside scoop on why the vehicles look the way they do. I won't give away any of the story here, but I'll just say the designers' candidness led to a revealing, look-behind-the-scenes read that drives home the point there's a reason for every curve or straight line in the mass tonnage we call motor vehicles. It's fascinating just how much design thought goes into every inch of an automobile.

On the topic of mass tonnage and transportation, writer Elaine Glusac headed down to South America to board the new Belmond Andean Explorer, which travels uncharted territory in Peru. The luxury sleeper train sounds like another design marvel, with suites large enough for double beds and en suite bathrooms. I've never slept overnight on a train, but Elaine's story piques my interest in doing so - provided the train's as comfortable as the Explorer.

If you like luxury accommodations but trains aren't your thing, board a jetliner for some tropical pampering at any of the lush properties writer Paul Rubio spotlights in "Fantasy Islands." Located far from U.S. soil, they all require serious travel time in the air, but Paul swears they're worth it - and the photos back him up. The resorts don't come cheap, but you get good value for your money.

Hope you enjoy these stories and the many others you'll find in this issue.
