Mayahuel

The place to savor mezcal in Manhattan

By Jenny Adams

if your travels take you to New York City, check out Mayahuel restaurant, one of the best spots to sip mezcal north of the border. The intimate, 1-year-old East Village sanctuary stocks 15 labels (including Ilegal's line) and whips up 16 mezcal cocktails in its bar.

It's an all-around authentic experience. When serving mezcal neat, bartenders use tiny clay cups that replicate the gourds Oaxacans used to drink the liquor. Add to the traditional service tile and iron art, leather banquettes, rich woods, and red lighting, and Mayahuel combines the intrinsic charm of older East Village dive bars with the sophistication of the 'hood's younger, swankier cocktail speakeasies.

The food? Think black bean and plantain croquetas and fiery chilies rellenos. 304 E. 6th St.; 212-253-5888; mayahuelny.com
