Just-opened clubhouse re-energizes Texas’ April Sound Country Club
Roughly two-and-a-half years after a fire destroyed its 1970s clubhouse, April Sound Country Club in Montgomery, Texas, has returned to full-functioning glory — in style, we might add. Gone are the days of operating out of the 6,600-square-foot Lakeside Room, the club’s free-standing special-events facility that doubled as home during construction. In March, more than 1,000 people celebrated the brand-new digs, jam-packed with better-than-ever amenities.
Sized up: Though the 20,000-square-foot, split-level clubhouse is 5,000 square feet smaller than the pioneer abode, the improved layout establishes a better flow, according to general manager David Mosberg. Earth tones and slate flooring create a warm, inviting atmosphere. But one thing hasn’t changed: spectacular panoramic views of Lake Conroe.
Dining dish: After playing a round on the 18-hole Carlton Gibson-designed golf course, get a bite to eat at the snack bar near the pro shop, or head over to the casual Phoenix Grille, which provides indoor and patio seating for nearly 100 people. For a more formal dinner experience, try the Waterside Dining Room, where reservations are required, sport coats suggested, and no denim allowed.
Coolest new attraction: On Friday evenings, the club’s heart beats at the Patio Pub. Located directly under the Grille’s upstairs patio, the hot spot dishes out live entertainment, light hors d’oeuvres, and select sandwiches. Within view of the aquatic driving range, sip drink specials by the granite bar beneath stainless-steel ceiling fans, dine at umbrella-topped teak tables, and mill around a 12-foot-wide fire pit filled with 3,000 pounds of blue glass.
Tribute time: Black-and-white photos in the History Hall capture celebs Lloyd Bridges and Phyllis Diller hosting some of the club’s first tennis tourneys, and Arnold Palmer playing in a golf exhibition match for the course’s opening.
This and that: Other clubhouse amenities include a boardroom, multipurpose community room, bridal suite, and fitness center with aerobics room.
Member feedback: "People are coming to April Sound for everything now – dining, special events, golf. It's a hot spot, a place to see and be seen." – Donna Kopecky, member

1 commentThe new clubhouse is fabulous and brings so much to our very close community. The new staff is excellent as is the food from Chef Paul. We used to have to go to another city to find this kind of atmosphere accompanied by terrific food, and lots of activities. Our quality of life has really gone up.
