Back in the middle ages, cooks at the English royal court prepared elaborate fruit bowls using meat molded and decorated to mimic apples, cherries, and plums - as an intricate but delicious party gag. Proving a good joke never ages, the "meat fruit" dished up for my lunch in London today looks every bit the tangerine it feigns to be.
