On Christmas Eve 1998, Bruce Cakebread climbed Napa Valley's Howell Mountain and looked out over 200 acres of mostly tree-covered California hillside roamed by bears and wild turkeys. He saw a spectacular opportunity, and just days later Cakebread Cellars, the Napa Valley winemaker founded in 1973 by Bruce's father, Jack, bought the land, named it Dancing Bear Ranch, and started making wine there.
